Mt Oberlin is an 8,184' peak in Glacier National Park that's near the Logan Pass visitor center. While AllTrails says to "proceed cautiously", SummitPost calls it "friendly".
While I definitely proceeded cautiously since I was hiking solo in grizzly country, the hike itself was a lot closer to the "friendly" variety once I figured out the correct route. There's some scrambling, but not Class 3/4 unless you want it.
So, if you come to the passage in the picture where you see my shadow, that's not the way unless you want to downclimb in inward-sloping 10' rock that I was very wary to attempt alone. Instead, simply turn around a bit and go around that to the downhill side.
There's a scree slope that some use for the return, but anyone responsible should avoid that lest they cause even more erosion. I returned the way I came.
SummitPost also says "it is important to check in at the ranger station". You should, but I didn't. I ran into a dangerously unhelpful ranger at the St Mary visitor center; more on that in my Reynolds Mountain post. For that reason, I'm reluctant to talk to the rangers there unless absolutely necessary.
