These are pictures and a video from the "Satwiwa Loop and Upper Cabin Trail" (link) on the western edge of the Santa Monica Mountains. The first part of the trail - the Old Cabin Trail - is a joggable Class 1 trail. That trail ends at the remains of the old cabin and the Danielson monument, which commemorates the man whose land became part of Point Mugu State Park and the neighboring NPS property.
After the old cabin, the Upper Cabin trail starts and, it's a bit different from what came before. While it's not overly steep, you're walking through a seasonal watercourse and it's some variant of rocky, a narrow channel, or somewhat overgrown. There's one part that's low Class 2. All good so far, except for the one thing I haven't mentioned yet: there are several low-hanging twigs and a few low-hanging branches. There are even a couple of spots where you'll either need to limbo or crawl to avoid bumping your head. Having to hunch over for a mile or more is not exactly Type 1 fun. You can do it sideways parkour monkey-style, or just take it head on. Either way, that segment is more Type 2 fun.
Then, you reach what seems to be an unnamed peaklet and there are several named peaks around. I, as usual, had got a late start and, while I got back well before sunset - the closing time for the parking lot - I didn't want to risk getting back late by attempting one of the other peaks. I'll come back for those, so stay tuned.
