Getting to the highest point in Nebraska is one of the most treacherous, bravest things I've ever done.
I still don't know how I did it, but I bagged the Nebraska highpoint and I had to fend off herds of ravenous bison to do it. Unlike domestic animals and cows, bison are smart and have long memories. They well remember attempts to eat them by both cowboys and Indians. And, they know that not only do some of us still eat them now, but governments even promote eating more of them.
And, the bison don't like that one bit. They believe in eating humans before humans eat them.
The Nebraska highpoint - all 5,429' of it - is actually on a working bison ranch. Thankfully, as you can see, the bison were off in the distance no doubt devouring other humans. So, I was able to sneak in quickly, bag the peak, and get out with my skin.
Because of the danger from ravenous bison, the ranch owners don't want people hiking or biking to the peak. If you look closely at the image, you can see I didn't bike there, I was just using my bike as a prop. So, no rules were broken.
There's a $3 suggested donation and an iron ranger at the entrance, but based on the relatively small number of visitors who signed the register, the owners probably aren't bringing in much compared to how much they can get for a bison or how much they probably get from having a wind farm on their property.
Also please find attached a raw, unedited BTS video from MTV's visit to the highpoint.
And, I suggest not using Google Maps to direct you to the ranch. While it got me there, it also sent me down an unnecessary long dirt road that dumped me on to an asphalt road near I-80. At least verify the map you use.
